November 16, 2015 2:45 pm

Here's a sure sign that the holiday season is right around the corner: The Grand Illumination Parade, an annual Norfolk holiday tradition, returns for its 31st year this weekend! During this family-friendly event, the crowd is lead in a countdown that ends in the ceremonious lighting of the downtown Norfolk skyline.

The illumination takes place promptly at 7 p.m., but the festivities aren't over yet! The lighting of the skyline is immediately followed by a festive seasonal parade that winds its way along two miles' worth of Norfolk city streets. The parade, which features marching bands, seasonal floats, local dancers, and a special appearance by Santa, will step off from the corner of St. Paul’s Boulevard and Main Street and end at the intersection near the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel.

With food available for purchase, the Grand Illumination Parade is free to attend and is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21. Don't forget to bring folding chairs from home at Northwest!

It's salty, it's shelled, and it's delicious by the handful or in your favorite savory and sweet snacks. We're talking about the peanut, of course, and if you're a fan of this nutty legume, then be sure to plan a visit to the Suffolk Peanut Fest! A Suffolk tradition for nearly four decades, this annual festival will return for its 38th year to the Suffolk Executive Airport, not too far from Northwest.

The family-friendly fun starts on Thursday, Oct. 8, and continues for three days thereafter. On the docket for this year's event? Tractor pulls, pony rides, a petting zoo, amusement park rides and games, a demolition derby, cornhole tournament, and plenty of live music — and peanuts! It's all part of the festival's mission: to "honor [Suffolk]’s agriculture heritage and devotion to peanuts, our favorite legumes."

The Suffolk Peanut Fest is free to enter, and parking will be offered at $15 per vehicle, per entry. If you plan on attending the event more than once this year, consider purchasing a four-day parking pass for $25.
