Do you think that you can build the best LEGO ship in Northwest and the surrounding areas? At the Brick-by-Brick LEGO Shipbuilding Event hosted by the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, you can show off your LEGO skills while also competing to win exciting prizes. People of all ages are invited to participate in this fun, friendly competition, so start honing your shipbuilding skills!

The fifth annual Brick-by-Brick LEGO Shipbuilding competition is held at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, and it’s entirely free to the public. The competition will be separated into two categories: the pre-made ship division and another division for those who want to build their ships on the day of the event. If you choose to construct your ship at home, simply bring it to the museum for display by 2 p.m. on February 6. Once all of the ships are in, judges will choose five winners in different age categories and even a fan favorite chosen by the audience. You’ll even get to meet Hampton Roads Naval Museum educators and learn more about the science behind shipbuilding.

January 6, 2016 2:45 pm

Fending off cabin fever, Northwest? We might know the cure: Head to the Children's Museum of Virginia! Open Tuesdays through Sundays, this Portsmouth venue is more of an entertainment venue than an actual "museum." That's thanks to the facility's two floors of interactive, educational exhibits, all of which are designed to pique the imagination and curiosity of the young and young and heart.

For example, little ones can create giant bubbles, then go grocery shopping within the museum's simulated supermarket, sized just for them. There are also exhibits pertaining to pets, art, transportation, and music, along with a Thomas and Friends play area. These permanent exhibits are complemented by the Children's Museum of Virginia's roster of daily activities, which has been newly revamped for 2016. Included with museum admission, the activities span make-and-take crafts, paper airplane races, and obstacle courses to STEM workshops and interactive story times!

Set aside the hustle and bustle of shopping malls and city sidewalks this holiday season when you visit Christmas in the Country, a holiday event held on a scenic ranch just minutes from Northwest. You'll feel like you've traveled back in time when you arrive at this old fashioned holiday gathering, which first began back in 1987.

At Christmas in the Country, you'll find a working ranch decorated with twinkling holiday lights on all of its barns, farmhouses, and other buildings. Embark on a pony ride or a hay ride around the ranch's beautiful grounds before checking out the nature activities and the Critter Corral, which is filled with some of your favorite farmyard creatures. Once the sun goes down, settle in around the campfire with a hot mug of cocoa and food from the numerous vendors to spend some quality time with your friends and neighbors.
