May 13, 2015 2:30 pm

Arrrggh, matey! No plans this weekend? Join your fellow swashbucklers and buccaneers from Northwest and make your way to 17th Street Park at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Once there, you'll encounter a scene you likely won't see every day: hundreds upon hundreds of people dressed in full pirate garb!

That's because the annual Pirate Party on the Beach takes place this Saturday and Sunday. The family-friend event, which is free to attend, promises everything from stunt shows, make-and-take crafts, and cannon firings to storytellings, treasure hunts, and pirate re-enactors. Be sure to arrive in costume if you want to compete in the party's costume contest and, if you want to watch a movie as you dig your toes into the sand, show up for the outdoor movie screening at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Watch Colorful, 80-Foot-Long Kites Zip Through the Sky During the 2015 Atlantic Coast Kite Festival, Taking Place This Saturday Near Northwest

April 27, 2015 2:45 pm

If you'll be at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this-coming Saturday, be sure to direct your gaze toward the sky. There, you're likely to spot dozens upon dozens of colorful kites, each tethered to a participant in this year's "Best Kite Contest." Part of the annual Atlantic Coast Kite Festival, this fun-filled contest invites kite enthusiasts of all ages to showcase their hand-crafted kite — and their ability to keep it in the sky — for a chance at a trophy and, of course, bragging rights.

If you'd rather just watch from the sidelines, you can do that, too. Stake out a spot on the sand to watch the kites twirl and dive overhead, then participate in a free kite-building workshop led by a pro kite flier. You can also learn the ropes (er, strings) with a free "Flight Training" class, then watch the pros in action as they maneuver giant, 80-foot kites across the horizon!

Admission to the Atlantic Coast Kite Festival 2015 is free. Hope to see you there, Northwest!
